At it’s industry expo in Anaheim, Disney shared details of a new movie about Princess Moana, coming in November 2016.
Unlike most Disney Princess films, Moana breaks the traditional fair-skinned princess look with her Polynesian complexion. According to Ashley Monaé, reporting for Madame Noire, “directors Ron Clements and John Musker describe the Polynesian princess as a ‘born navigator.'” The story line follows the princess as she sets out on sea to find an island near Oceania. The first Disney animation to sail in the South Seas since ‘Lilo and Stitch,’ in 2002. Accompanying her on the journey are her pet pig, Pug, and Hei Hei the rooster, who are being compared to Olaf and Dory. Also making an appearance in the film will be Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as Maui, a demigod. Johnson reported that he is proud to take part in the film because it about his heritage, half-Samoan and half-black.
