The Pope hits America. Pope Francis will be making his first visit to the United States, on Tuesday, September 22, 2015.
He will arrive in Washington DC at Joint Base Andrews Air Force Base. This visit marks the first time since 2008 that a pope has visited the U.S, and the third time a pope has met a U.S. president. It also coincides with the United Nations General Assembly, where heads of state from almost 170 countries are expected to attend. The Pope will address the Assembly.
The pope’s trip will most likely focus on those in the margins of society, such as the poor and homeless. Immigration will also be a huge focus for the pope, due to its relevancy in the 2016 presidential debates.
Security officials have been in training for this historic event. In New York, training exercises are being held in order to train officials. The exercises were prepared by the Federal Department for Homeland Security, which includes the Secret Service.
Pope Francis will first visit Washington DC, where he will meet with President Obama and Congress. He will then travel to New York City to make his speech at the UN before making his
final stop in Philadelphia for the World Meeting of Families.
